Today I would like to share a touching anecdote from rural Hunan, China, back in the late 1970s‑early 1980s.
When electricity first reached remote mountain villages, many elderly residents had spent their whole lives using kerosene lamps. To turn the light off, they simply blew out the flame.
On the very first night with electric lighting, no one had shown an elderly villager how to operate the pull‑cord switch. When bedtime came, he climbed onto a stool, leaned toward the hanging incandescent bulb, and blew hard again and again. No matter how hard he huffed and puffed, the bulb stayed bright.
Frustrated and confused, he complained to his son: “This lamp is bright enough, but it has one big flaw. I cannot blow it out all night long. How am I supposed to sleep?”
This little story speaks volumes about how far we have travelled. China has transformed from an agrarian society into a global manufacturing powerhouse. This remarkable shift came from decades of relentless hard work by generations of people.
